Piano Bar

by JÖRG ZEMMLER

  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

    The extended piano.

Recorded in 2021 on an analogue (wall) piano, Piano Bar is improvised live, with live loops and live digital sustain. No post-processing, apart from the mastering.
Piano Bar is the result of a search for new forms for the piano, the expansion of the instrument with new technology without alienating it. The loops are additional hands that play along, so to speak, and the digital sustain amplifies what the analogue pedal can also do.
Music that arises in the moment, depending on mood, chance, listening. One note gives the next, one loop gives the next, in sync or not, the pads from the digital (and endlessly possible) sustain in addition. The analogue pedals of the piano are also used.
The individual tracks go from rhythmic compositions (Ein Tanz, Hinterrücks, mc2) to chords reduced to a few (Behutsam, Verschanzt) to dreamy ones (Vor Glück, Flackern, Genug). In terms of sound and loops, Blinzeln is sometimes reminiscent of The Notwist. Mondlicht, on the other hand, is the only piece that comes without loops and digital sustain, but with a strong use of the damper pedal.
References include Cage, Feldman, Satie, free jazz, minimal music, but also Beethoven in his quieter passages.
Piano Bar functions as both foreground and background music. In the living room, in the concert hall, in the jazz bar or last but not least in the piano bar.
Live, two contact microphones are attached to the piano and the computer is operated with a midi controller for looping and switching sustain on and off.
